Music in a single store is easy. Past 10 or 100 locations everything changes: every store plays something different, promotional announcements never reach some branches, and when a store goes silent for days nobody notices. This article explains how to centralise music management across a retail chain.
Four common problems in chains
- Inconsistent brand experience: each branch plays its own playlist; customers hear two different brands in two stores.
- Late campaigns: new announcements are sent by e-mail or USB stick, and some branches play last month’s promotion for weeks.
- Silent stores: a device is switched off, the sound is muted, the internet drops, and head office only finds out from a complaint.
- No record: nobody knows what was played where.
The solution: a brand → region → store hierarchy
HYDW Music Player Dashboard organises playback in three layers: the brand’s default programme applies to every store, with exceptions by region or store. Mall branches and high-street stores can play different playlists, and a newly opened store receives the brand’s defaults automatically.
One change, hundreds of stores
Prepare a campaign playlist once and give it a start and end date; it starts automatically at every selected store on the day and disappears when it ends. Players check for new content every 30 seconds, so changes go live within minutes.
HYDW
Every store, one screen
Online and offline stores, what is playing, muted devices and the latest signal losses, live in the dashboard on the web and in the iOS / Android app.
Be the first to know about a silent store
If a store sends no signal for 30 minutes or its sound stays muted for 15, store, regional and brand contacts are notified by e-mail and WhatsApp during business hours. Business hours are set separately per store, region, brand or system-wide, so a store that is closed at night never triggers needless alerts.
To check status without opening the dashboard, simply message the WhatsApp assistant.
Music keeps playing when the internet doesn’t
A chain’s worst fear is silence at hundreds of locations at once. With HYDW, music is downloaded to the device and played locally; playback continues offline and new content downloads in the background when the connection returns. For branches without a computer, the HYDW Music Box can be part of the standard store fit-out.
On the record, every day
Every night, everything each store played the previous day is compiled into a KamuSM-timestamped PDF report per brand. See Music and Licensing for details.
For very large organisations
For organisations running several brands and their own IT policies, the HYDW platform can be deployed on the organisation’s own servers (on-premise). Find industry-specific examples on our background music for retail chains page.
Frequently asked questions
How many locations can be managed?
HYDW plays at 5,000+ locations today, and the same platform serves single venues and multi-brand chains.
Can store staff change the music?
The player has no local playback controls; the programme is managed centrally. Staff can only use your ready-made announcement keys.
How do we add a new store?
Connect the device and register the code on its screen in the dashboard; the brand’s default playlists are assigned automatically.
